Why Is My Hot Water Running Out?
Few things are as frustrating as a cold shower halfway through washing your hair. If your hot water is suddenly running out faster than it used to, here are the most likely culprits.
1. Sediment Build-Up in the Tank
Over time, minerals from Sydney's water supply settle at the bottom of your hot water tank. This sediment reduces the tank's effective capacity and forces the heating element to work harder. A simple flush and service can often restore full capacity.
2. A Faulty Thermostat
If the thermostat isn't accurately reading the water temperature, your system may not be heating to the set temperature. The water feels warm but runs out quickly because the tank was never fully heated.
3. A Failing Heating Element
In electric systems, one of the two heating elements may have failed. The system still produces some hot water, but at half capacity.
4. Increased Household Demand
Have more people moved into your home? A tank that was fine for 2 people may struggle with 4. This is especially common in shared houses.
5. The System Is Just Old
Most hot water systems last 8–12 years. As they age, efficiency drops. If your system is getting on in years, it may simply be time for a replacement.
